The best way to store jewellery
Does your jewellery collection resemble a tangled, tarnished mess at the bottom of a drawer? Fear not, jewellery lovers! Here are three ways to store, present, and care for your precious pieces, and the pros and cons for each different way.
The Trinket Dish
Pros: Perfect for everyday pieces you reach for constantly. A pretty trinket dish, made of ceramic or hand-painted glass looks great on your bedside table or dresser and doesn’t take up too much space. It keeps your most-worn rings, earrings, necklaces or bracelets readily accessible.
Cons: Limited space, best suited for small collections. Not ideal for necklaces or bracelets that might get knotted. Not ideal for long term storage as items can tarnish if not worn and left for too long in the open air.
Tips: Use a trinket dish for your most used pieces only. Regularly remove and store any pieces that haven’t been worn for a while in a more longer term storage solution such as a jewellery box. Use a cloth to clean away the dirt and grease from the day as often as you can.
The Jewellery Box
Pros: Provides complete protection from dust, scratches, and tangles. A well-crafted jewellery box, lined with soft velvet, is the perfect home for your entire collection. Choose one with compartments for different pieces, keeping everything organised and preventing tarnishing. You can even store your pieces in separate boxes or bags to help prevent them from tarnishing.
Cons: Can be bulky and might hide your beautiful pieces away. Finding specific items can be time-consuming, especially in larger boxes. Often pieces stored away from view just get less use!
Tips: Try to rotate your jewellery that’s stored away and remember to try and enjoy it! After all it was made to be worn! It’s a good idea to give pieces stored away like this a good clean once in a while too.
The Jewellery Stand
Pros: These can be great for storing a range of different pieces depending on the style of the stand. One with different tiers and branches allows necklaces and bracelets to hang tangle free.
Cons: Limited storage for earrings and rings. Not ideal for very delicate pieces that might snag on the stand. Not great for long term storage as pieces will tarnish over time due to being exposed to the air.
Tips: These are great for enabling your jewellery to be chosen and worn, but not great for collecting dust and attracting tarnishing. Like the trinket dish, try to rotate your pieces between a jewellery box and the stand. Cleaning pieces between changes to try and keep your jewellery looking as good as new.
Caring for Your treasure
No matter which storage option you choose, remember to take proper care of your jewellery. Always try to wipe down your pieces with a soft polishing cloth regularly to remove dust and fingerprints at the end of the day. Store them away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent tarnishing if you can.
