The Making of a 'Heart of Gold' Necklace
When Kerrie (Gold Hearted Club) and I started working on our ‘Heart of Gold’ collaboration, I knew that I really wanted Kerrie to be integral to the making of the jewellery, and not just the design. Which was why I was keen for us to try working with wax first as I knew this would be much easier than trying to teach Kerrie silversmithing.
We started by experimenting with carving blue wax, but also playing around with the softer, clay like, red wax. We soon realised was that the red wax not only felt symbolic of the heart, being red, but also that each heart we created was always very slightly different.
We were able to create lots of tiny little details, creases and folds which made each one completely unique. We fell in love with the idea that these perfectly imperfect hearts were very much symbolic of all the precious hearts that may have been affected by heart disease. And whether imperfect or perfect they would always be a 'Heart of Gold'.
Our one-of-a-kind ‘Heart of Gold’ necklace is still the most popular piece from our GHC x N collaboration. I imagine this is because each one is completely unique, just like the heart of it’s owner.
If you haven’t explored our wonderful collection which continues to raise awareness of heart disease as well as vital funds for The British Heart Foundation (10% of each sale is donated) then see here to learn more.
