What is the Handmade & Well Paid pledge?

Narratorium has signed the Handmade & Well Paid pledge, but what is it? Let me explain…

Handmade & Well Paid is a campaign initiated by Jewellers Academy to help handmade jewellers and other makers ensure that they are well paid for the work they do whilst helping consumers to make good decisions about who they buy from, as well as feel confident that what they are buying is fairly priced.

As a handmade jeweller and small business, it’s really important to make sure you are pricing your work properly otherwise the business is simply not sustainable. So many makers get it wrong and will tend to massively under charge for their work as they believe it will lead to more sales, but this is often not the case.

In fact the majority of consumers actually really value and appreciate the work of handmade artists and want to support them to ensure they are able to make a decent living for themselves, and so are therefore willing to pay the price the maker has stated.

Which is why Jewellers Academy started the campaign, with the aim of educating handmade artists on how to price their work properly, so that both makers and consumers can feel confident about buying handmade work, knowing that it is neither over or under priced.
